1Password Families is the premium password manager for households that want the best UX and don’t mind paying for it.
Why pay $60/year over Bitwarden free:
- UX is notably more polished (autofill more reliable, mobile app smoother)
- Family sharing flows are exceptional (shared vault + private vaults per member, role permissions)
- Travel Mode hides selected vaults when crossing borders (legal scrutiny tool)
- Watchtower scans for breaches, weak passwords, compromised sites continuously
- Customer support genuinely helpful
Use cases where 1Password wins:
- Family with non-tech members (spouse, parents, kids)
- Professional context where reliability matters more than $60/year
- Heavy mobile use (mobile app polish difference noticeable)
Use cases where Bitwarden wins:
- Solo tech-savvy user (no family premium needed)
- Tight budget ($10/year vs $60/year)
- Self-host requirement (Vaultwarden on Raspberry Pi)
Travel Mode: unique feature — mark vaults as “Travel-safe” or not. When crossing border, enable Travel Mode and only Travel-safe vaults appear. Border control can’t compel you to reveal what isn’t visible. Useful for journalists, lawyers, activists.
vs LastPass: LastPass had a major breach in 2022 with encrypted vault exfiltration. Move to 1Password or Bitwarden. There’s no reason to use LastPass in 2026.
Verdict: pick 1Password if family + UX matter more than $60/year. Otherwise Bitwarden.
