NordVPN is the VPN we recommend first because the trade-offs are the cleanest in the consumer VPN market. It is fast enough that you forget it is running, the no-logs policy has been independently audited (not just claimed), and the client is genuinely simple to use on every platform we have tested.
What it solves
NordVPN exists to do three things, in this order:
- Stop your ISP from selling your browsing history. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and most of the EU, your internet service provider can sell anonymized browsing data to advertisers. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and a NordVPN server, so the ISP only sees that you connected to a VPN, not which sites you visit.
- Make public Wi-Fi safe. Cafe, airport, hotel Wi-Fi is the most common attack vector for credential theft. A VPN makes the connection useless to anyone sniffing the network.
- Bypass geo-restrictions. Netflix US from Italy, BBC iPlayer from the United States, sports streams blocked in your region. NordVPN reliably bypasses every major geo-block we have tested in 2025-2026.
It does not solve: government-level surveillance (a VPN is not a panacea against the NSA), full anonymity (use Tor for that), or your own bad password hygiene.
Real-world speed test
Tested on a 1 Gbps fiber connection in Italy, server connecting to United States East Coast:
- Direct (no VPN): 940 Mbps down, 920 Mbps up
- NordVPN US-East server: 540 Mbps down, 380 Mbps up
- Latency added: +85ms (Rome to New York)
That is about a 40 percent speed reduction, which is normal for transatlantic VPN traffic. For local-region servers (Italy to Italy), the loss is closer to 5 percent. For 4K streaming, gaming, video calls, this performance is more than enough. For day-trading or high-frequency latency-sensitive work, a closer server is better.
Pricing reality
The advertised $3.39 per month price is for the 2-year commitment paid upfront ($81 total). Year 3 onward, it auto-renews at the equivalent of $12 per month unless you opt out. We recommend:
- First-time buyer: 2-year plan upfront for $81. Enable renewal reminder in your calendar 30 days before year 2 ends.
- Renewal: cancel auto-renew, wait for the customer-win-back email (usually offers $59 for another 2 years), or use the 30-day money-back guarantee to start a fresh promotional cycle.
This price-renewal pattern is industry-wide (ExpressVPN, Surfshark, all the same). Treat the year-3 jump as a feature, not a betrayal.
Who should buy NordVPN
Buy NordVPN if:
- You want a VPN that “just works” with minimal setup
- You travel internationally and need geo-unblocking
- You use public Wi-Fi regularly (cafe, hotel, airport, co-working)
- You want a single subscription for the whole household (6 device limit)
Buy something else if:
- You need server count above 6,000 globally (Surfshark has more)
- You need port forwarding for self-hosted services (ProtonVPN does this; NordVPN does not)
- You are budget-constrained under $40 per year (Surfshark trial offers go this low occasionally)
Setup time
Less than 10 minutes total:
- Click affiliate link, sign up with email + payment
- Download the NordVPN app on each device (Mac/Windows/iOS/Android/Linux all supported)
- Log in, click the “Quick Connect” button, you are protected
- Enable Threat Protection in settings for ad/malware blocking
- Optional: enable Meshnet for self-hosted networking between your devices
You do not need to configure individual server selection unless you want a specific country. Quick Connect picks the fastest available server automatically.
